The initial layout consisted of five rudimentary holes on rented farmland. By 1912 the club members had acquired enough land to construct a more complete 9 hole golf course, which was laid out by Alexander Findlay, a Scottish golf professional and early golf course designer, often called the “father of American golf”. While the golf course has undergone many changes and improvements over the decades, elements of that original routing are still visible. As golf grew in popularity, Meadow Brook joined other golf clubs as a founding member of the Massachusetts Golf Association in 1903. In 1913, a young Francis Ouimet captured the Meadow Brook Invitational in a playoff over John Anderson – only a few months after Ouimet had shocked the sporting world by beating Harry Vardon & Ted Ray to win the U.S. Open. Club records indicate that Mr. Ouimet returned often to Meadow Brook during the pre-WWI years. During the 1920’s, renovations and improvements were made to the golf course based on the designs of golf course architect Wayne Stiles. And in the 1960’s several holes were lengthened and redesigned under the direction of Geoffrey Cornish. The club has continued to make improvements to its cherished, classic old course over the years, and many will say that you won’t find a string of opening holes more demanding than the first four at Meadow Brook. While golf has been played on this beautiful, rolling landscape for nearly 120 years, the true spirit of Meadow Brook is its members, past and present, who have preserved this legacy for future generations to enjoy. Meadow Brook draws its membership from a variety of communities in and around Reading and offers a family-oriented experience within a private members-only club. The Club has a challenging 9-hole golf course, an Olympic-size pool, and both clay and asphalt tennis courts. The golf, pool, and tennis programs are managed by our professional staff making Meadow Brook the ideal Club experience for the entire family. Our clubhouse provides dining services to the membership and is able to accommodate functions of up to 140 guests. Our executive chef and dining room staff provide exceptional service whether serving lunch or an elegant dinner. Meadow Brook currently has openings in a couple of categories. Click Here and fill out the Inquiry Form. we will get information back to you right away. Do I need references? Two references from current Meadow Brook members are required. Is there an initiation fee? Yes, all members are required to pay a Club social member initiation fee, which is non- refundable. That initiation fee is the only one you pay if you choose either or both Swim or Tennis as your activity. If you choose Golf as your activity, there is an additional fee depending on which type of Golf membership you choose. Are these initiation fees a bond? No, they are non-refundable fees. Is there a payment plan? Yes, Denise, our Office Manager, will be happy to explain the different payment options available. Are the dues included in the initiation fee(s)? No, Dues for each activity will be billed separately upon acceptance. There is also an installment plan option for dues. The Meadow Brook year for which dues are billed is January 1st to December 31st. So I’ve filled out my application and have my check ready, what’s next? Send the completed Application Form along with a check for your initiation fees to the Club and it will be presented to the Board at their next meeting. (generally the Board meets the third Thursday of each month). The application is presented to the Board at the first meeting after it is received and voted on at the following meeting. Does that mean I have to wait 60 days if I apply in June? The summer would be over by the time I get accepted. The Board grants conditional memberships in that situation so you can enjoy the Club immediately upon the Board’s receipt of your application and appropriate fees. What if I decide to join mid-season? Anyone applying for membership after August 1st will pay half the annual dues. In their words...
